Moonee Ponds Wellness Centre - Massage.

We offer two types of massage at our centre, both are therapeutic, they are:

*deep tissue massage and
*Tuina

Tuina is a form of massage that has existed for thousands of years.  It is of oriental origin, an extension of other forms of therapy used in the east such as acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.

Tuina involves different techniques to other forms of massage to release tension, invigorate circulation and relax the muscles and the long term goal is to eventually relieve the muscles from pain, tension or tightness and soreness.

Tuina focuses on certain pressure points or trigger and acupuncture points which have been proven to release tension and soreness in the muscles.
By using techniques mainly with the palms, fingers and elbow of the arm to get into the muscles, Tuina is a very invigorating but at the same time relaxing, especially for those who like deep tissue massages.

Who can benefit from deep tissue massage and Tuina?

People who have a lot of tension in their body through work, posture or mental/emotional stress or even exercise can benefit from Tuina. Deep tissue massage and Tuina is very invigorating but at the same time relaxing so you will come out feeling different. In a good way!

Examples are:

- People who are sitting for majority of the day in an office.
- People who exercise and feel like the muscles are tight and heavy and this restricts them from achieving their best.
-
People who feel like their circulation isn’t too good, ie varicose veins, cold hands and feet easily.
- People who feel like they hold tension/tightness and soreness in their muscles and feel like they cannot relax or they feel wound up also benefit from Tuina.

Physically, in terms of soft tissue(muscle), these people may feel like they have hard accumulations under the skin or generally the muscles are very tight.

What is Cupping?

Cupping is an ancient technique used by many civilizations and cultural backgrounds over thousands of years including Italians, Greeks, Turks and Chinese to help release anything from tension/inflammation in the muscles to release toxins/viruses from the body and also to bring up phlegm in the lungs by utilizing the body’s own healing capacities.  Glass cups are used in which they are heated up and quickly placed on the skin which then uses the vacuum to create a suction which then forms what looks like a bruise in the shape of a circle.  Depending on how many toxins and tension you have the colour and intensity of the bruise reflects this; as seen on Gwyneth Paltrow at the 2006 Academy Awards and on Grant Hackett from the Australian Olympic Swimming Team.

Does the massage and cupping hurt?

Having the cupping done, which feels like someone is just gently pulling your skin, (it doesn’t hurt at all) actually helps the muscles recover from the massage faster, the soreness improves the more massage and cupping you have as the circulation and the lymphatic system improves so the build up of toxins in the muscles causing the soreness is less each time.
